Before The Bigs:

  • Was starting point guard for the University of Arizona in 1988, when the Wildcats advanced to the Final Four.
  • Was drafted in the 17th round in 1988, and played minor league baseball during the basketball offseason.
  • After a slow start to his minor league career at the plate, he hit .331 at Single-A Osceola with 62 stolen bases in 1990, then .308 with 40 stolen bases and 17 triples at Triple-A Tucson in 1991.
  • Was called up to the Astros in September 1991.
  • Career Highlights:

    • Was traded to the Cleveland Indians before the 1992 season for catcher Eddie Taubensee and pitcher Willie Blair.
    • Finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year voting to the Brewers’ Pat Listach after hitting .285 with 66 stolen bases in 1992.
    • Led the AL in hits in 1994 and was fourth in MVP voting.
    • Was leadoff hitter and center fielder for the Indians from 1992-96, and 1998-2001. Played for the Atlanta Braves in 1997.
    • A six-time All-Star and a four-time Gold Glove winner, he’s a lifetime .300 hitter as of July 2007.
    • Led the AL in stolen bases every season from 1992 to 1996.
    • Has bounced around from team to team later in his career, playing for the White Sox, Giants, Pirates, Cubs, Yankees, Phillies, Dodgers and Rangers. He's played in the playoffs in 10 seasons, and made the World Series for the Indians in 1995 and the Giants in 2002.
