History:

The franchise was founded in 1884 as the Brooklyn Atlantics, and was also known during various periods as the Grooms, Bridegrooms, Trolley Dodgers, Superbas, and Robins. The team joined the NL in 1890, and moved to Los Angeles in 1958.

Memorable Moments:

  • Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey spearheaded the effort to integrate the game, and Jackie Robinson became the first African-American player in the major leagues on April 15, 1947.
  • In 1955, after several near-misses and five World Series losses to the crosstown Yankees, the Dodgers broke through and won the championship in seven games.
  • League MVP Kirk Gibson’s dramatic home run off Dennis Eckersley – in his only plate appearance of the 1988 World Series because of injuries to both legs – gave the Dodgers a Game 1 victory over the Oakland A’s, and sparked the underdog Dodgers to a sweep of the series.
