There are a few different kinds of bunts. A drag bunt, usually performed by a left-handed hitter, is effective for fast runners. A player gets almost a running start, surprising the defense by bunting the ball down the third-base line.

On a squeeze play, a runner is on third base and he or she runs as the pitcher releases the ball. When the bunt is made the runner is already almost home, but a player must make contact.
