Holding The Bat

The Florida Marlins' Alejandro De Aza lays down a bunt in a 2007 game. De Aza is not in a good position here, as the ball is higher than the bat.

Hold the bat parallel to the ground, or with the barrel slightly higher than the handle.

The key is for the ball to hit the bottom half of the bat, so the ball goes to the ground immediately. A pop-up bunt is a recipe for disaster. The runner won't advance if the ball is caught in the air, and it's a recipe for a double play.
