Career Highlights:

  • A self-made businessman, he purchased the Louisville Colonels and merged them with the Pirates in 1900 when the National League shrank from 12 to 8 teams.
  • Considered instrumental in creating the modern World Series, as he agreed to have his Pirates play American League champion Boston in 1903.
  • Was the NL's first vice president.
  • Was known as a great judge of baseball talent, and his Pirates won World Series championships in 1909 and 1925, six pennants and finished second or better in the National League 13 times.
