The stolen base is the fantasy baseball equivalent of the 40-yard dash at the NFL combine.
It fools you. It can trick you into making a bad decision. It causes you to ignore your better judgment and base your decision on something exciting rather than something practical.
In football, the practical question - can this guy play? - is sometimes superseded by the (cue Jay Bilas on NBA draft night) player's "upside." In fantasy baseball, the practical - does Speedy Player A do anything else better than Solid Hitter B? - is overlooked, especially in category leagues, because the likes of Carl Crawford steal a base every second or third game.
All of which is a long-winded way of getting to our all-overrated, all-underrated and money teams. The average position ranking is compiled by examining the player's rating on other sites.
