Nine players have done it in the AL, the most recent being Ken Griffey Jr. (1997).

- Pujols is the 10th player to win the award three or more times and the first former Rookie of the Year Award winner to be a three-time MVP. The last player to repeat as NL MVP was Dale Murphy of the Braves (1982-83).
- Hanley Ramirez, who won the batting title (.342, 24 HR, 106 RBI), was second in the voting.
