History:

The franchise was founded in 1893 as the Sioux City (Iowa) Cornhuskers in the Western League, moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and became the Saints in 1894 before moving to Chicago in 1900. The Western League became the American League in 1901. Originally called the White Stockings, the name was shortened to White Sox in 1904.

Memorable Moments:

  • Eight players were banned from baseball for life following the “Black Sox” scandal of 1919, when commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis ruled that eight players, including star “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, were paid for fixing the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds.
  • The “Curse of the Black Sox” was finally put to rest in 2005, when the White Sox swept the Houston Astros in the World Series for their first title since the scandal.
