Topsy-turvy opening week
Monday April 7, 2008
A look at what’s making news after the first week of the season:
- What’s up is down and what’s down is up. The Detroit Tigers hardly look like a first-place team after an 0-6 start. The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are scuffling a bit as well, and the 2007 NL champion Rockies are 1-5.
- Andy Pettitte wasn't himself in his first start this season for the Yankees, and hopes the Mitchell Report saga doesn't follow him all season.
- Some good news for the Tigers. The Indians haven’t run away (3-3), and Curtis Granderson should be back soon. The bad news is that many other Tigers are already banged up, and they were embarrassed by losing their first six games, all at home.
- Ladies and gentlemen: Introducing the first-place ... Kansas City Royals? A solid start for new manager Trey Hillman.
- Pedro Martinez might not be back for six weeks with his hamstring strain, and the same old bullpen woes affected the New York Mets.
- Johnny Cueto had the best debut – 10 strikeouts, no walks and one hit in seven innings for the Cincinnati Reds, who are very optimistic about their young pitching staff. And a milestone watch: Ken Griffey Jr. is six homers short of 600 in his career.
- San Diego's Jake Peavy had two awesome starts to back up his 2007 Cy Young season, but what’s that stuff on his hands?
- Rick VandenHurk opened the season as the Florida Marlins’ No. 2 starter. A week later, he’s in Double-A. Yes, this rotation could be that bad.
- The St. Louis Cardinals are a pleasant surprise, and Rick Ankiel has started the season on a power streak.
- And Kerry Wood is 3-for-3 in save situations and looking like a very good closer, even if he’s not comfortable yet.
