Readers Respond: Who Is The Best Second Baseman of All-Time?

Responses: 9

By , About.com Guide

Some great players played second base early in the 20th century, from Nap Lajoie to Rogers Hornsby to Eddie Collins. In the middle of the decade, Jackie Robinson changed everything. And late in the century, a new hybrid of power, speed and fielding took over in players such as Roberto Alomar and Ryne Sandberg. Who is your pick for the best second baseman in baseball history? You Make The Call

Ryne Sandberg!

Everyone is forgetting about Ryne Sandberg. Sandberg is boss!

Hornsby

Anyone who doesn't have Hornsby as the best second baseman of all time (as was the case with the previous site I was on - it had Morgan) doesn't know baseball.

Pet Rose is MIA

Where's Pete Rose? The all-time hits leader doesn't even get a mention? (Note from site editor: Rose played more games in the outfield and at first base. Therefore, he doesn't qualify for this list.)

Bill Mazeroski

If you are talking hitters, that's one thing, but if you are talking second basemen -- overall including fielding -- Bill Mazeroski.

Hornsby. Hands down......................................

Alomar is beast !

Roberto Alomar is the man. Nothing against Morgan, but look at Alomar's stats. He's a monster.

Hornsby was best

No doubt - Rogers Hornsby - highest batting average - in dead ball era - leader on the team.

Joe Morgan way too high... on himself

Sandberg was better than Morgan 1. Morgan played on astroturf which gave a nice consistent bounce AND HE STILL HAD A WORSE FIELDING PERCENTAGE! 2. Morgan had teammates such as Rose, Bench, Concepcion, Perez & Griffey that protected him in the lineup. Sandberg had Mitch Webster, Doug Dascenzo, Rick Wrona, Domingo Ramos & Gary Varsho. 3. Morgan 268 HRs. Sandberg 282 HRs 4. Ryne Sandberg went 123 straight games without an error. 5. June 23, 1984 is the date of the Sandberg Game. There is no Morgan Game. 6. Sandberg, Brady Anderson & Barry Bonds are the only players to have both a 40-homer & 50-steal season during their careers. We all know how Bonds & Anderson got their numbers. 7. Morgan won 5 Gold Gloves, Sandberg's got 9 of them. 8. Morgan had 2,517 hits - Sandberg only had 2,386. Ryne played for 15 seasons, Joe went 21. 9. Sandberg -.285 career average - Morgan .271 10. Morgan's team did win 3 World Series titles, Sandberg's did not... please refer to point 2 for explanation why.

Hornsby best, but Doerr, Gordon slighted

Rogers Hornsby is the best second baseman of all time. Bobby Doerr and Joe Gordon are easily better than half of those on your list.
