The franchise was founded in 1969 as the Montreal Expos as a National League expansion team. In 2005, the team moved to Washington, D.C.
- The former Expos had poor timing for their best teams. The franchise won its only division title in the strike-torn 1981 season, when the season was split into halves, and lost in the National League Championship Series. Then, in 1994, the Expos had the best record in the league (74-40) when another strike ended the season with no champion.
- In 2003 and 2004, the Expos played 22 home games in Puerto Rico, the first team to play home games in Latin America.
