Before The Bigs:

  • Graduated from Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, Calif., where he also excelled in basketball. He was not drafted and attended Long Beach State, where he was a two-time All-Big West selection.
  • Was drafted in the first round, seventh overall, in 2005, by the Colorado Rockies.
  • Hit .268 at Single-A Modesto in 2005, then started 2006 at Double-A Tulsa where he hit .291 with 13 home runs. He spent the final month of the season with the Rockies.
  • Career Highlights:

    • Won the starting job in 2007 spring training and helped lead the Rockies to their first National League pennant, hitting .291 with 24 home runs and 99 RBI. He's a top candidate for NL Rookie of the Year.
    • On April 29, 2007, he turned the 13th unassisted triple play in major-league history on a ball hit by Atlanta's Chipper Jones.
    • Went 4 for 7 in the NL wild-card tiebreaking win over the San Diego Padres.
