- Martinez's father, Paolino, was one of the best pitchers in the Dominican Republic in the 1950s, a teammate to Felipe and Matty Alou when they played winter ball.
- He followed a path blazed by his older brother Ramon Martinez, and despite his small stature, his pitches were clocked at 80 mph at age 13 by a Dodgers scout when Pedro tagged along to one of Ramon's workouts.
- Also signed by the Dodgers, Martinez played for rookie-level Great Falls (Mont.) in 1991, and shot up through the Dodgers' system in 1992, finishing the season on the big-league team.
Career Highlights:
- Martinez won the Cy Young Award three times (1997, 1999, 2000).
- Started his career as a dominant reliever with the Dodgers in 1993; was traded to Montreal before the 1994 season.
- Retired the first 27 batters against San Diego in 1995, the equivalent of a perfect game, but lost the game in the 10th inning.
- He was traded to the Red Sox before the 1998 season, where he starred for seven seasons, going 117-37 and helping the Red Sox to a championship in his first World Series in 2004. Lead the AL in 1999 with a 23-4 record, 2.07 ERA and 313 strikeouts.
- Signed a four-year deal with the New York Mets before the 2005 season.
