Before The Bigs:
  • Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago White Sox at age 17 in 1991.
  • After hitting .180 and .216 in 1992 and 1993 in the low minors, he hit .294 with 11 home runs at Single-A Hickory in 1994.
  • Hit 18 home runs at Double-A Birmingham in 1996, and hit .329 with 90 RBIs at Triple-A Nashville in 1997. He was called up to the majors on Aug. 29, 1997.
Career Highlights:
  • Finished fifth in the American League Rookie of the Year voting after hitting .282 with 14 home runs for the White Sox in 1998.
  • Was named to his first All-Star Game in 1999, when he hit .301 with 30 home runs and 117 RBI.
  • In 2002, he set career-highs with 38 home runs and 135 RBIs and was fifth in the American League with a .320 average.
  • After a knee injury limited him to 52 games in 2004, he signed as a free agent with the Detroit Tigers before the 2005 season. His five-year, $75 million contract was the largest in Tigers history.
  • Hit .298 with 24 home runs in 2006 as the Tigers won the American League pennant.
