Before The Bigs:
- Signed as an amateur free agent with the New York Mets at age 17 in 1993.
- Progressed as a started through the Mets organization, his best season coming in 1996, when he was 11-3 at Single-A Columbia.
- After going 5-2 at Triple-A Norfolk in 1999, he was called up to the Mets as a starter in late June.
- Went 8-3 for the Mets as a rookie in 1999, starting 14 games and relieving in five others.
- Was traded to the Astros after the season in a deal that brought Mike Hampton and Derek Bell to New York.
