Before The Bigs:

  • Played college baseball at Pepperdine University and was roommates with Giants pitcher Noah Lowry.
  • Was named West Coast Conference Player of the Year in 2001.
  • Both Lowry and Haren skipped their senior seasons and were picked in the 2001 draft. Lowry went in the first round to the Giants and Haren in the second round (72nd overall) to the Cardinals.
  • Made a rapid ascent to the big leagues, and made his debut for St. Louis against the Giants on June 30, 2003.
  • Career Highlights:

    • Went 3-7 his rookie year in St. Louis and started 2004 in the minors. He was recalled for good in July and went 3-3 down the stretch. He pitched in relief for the NL champion Cardinals and won a Division Series game against the Dodgers.
    • Was traded with Daric Barton and Kiko Calero to the Athletics for pitcher Mark Mulder in December 2004.
    • Won 14 games in each of his first two seasons in Oakland, and led the American League with 36 starts in 2006.
    • After going 10-3 in his first 19 starts of 2007, he made his first All-Star team and started the game for the American League. Finished the season with a 15-9 record and a 3.07 ERA, third-best in the AL.
    • Traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for six minor-league players in December 2007.
