Before The Bigs:

  • Drafted in the first round by the Phillies (17th overall) out of Rancho Bernardo High School in San Diego.
  • Started his pro career by going 6-1 with a 0.84 ERA in 13 starts at Single-A Lakewood, where he yielded just 32 hits in 75 innings.
  • Missed most of the 2004 season with an elbow injury, and much of 2005 when he broke his left (pitching) hand in a bar fight.
  • Advanced from Single-A all the way to the Phillies in a month and a half in 2006. His minor-league totals were 14-4 with a 273 strikeouts in 35 games.
  • Career Highlights:

    • Yielded one hit in five innings in his major league debut against Cincinnati on May 12, 2006. Went 9-8 in 23 starts, including an eight-inning shutout against the Mets in August.
    • Struck out 15 in his first big-league complete game on April 21, 2007.
    • Was named to the National League All-Star team in 2007.
