Before The Bigs:
- Was 38th overall pick in the 2001 draft by the New York Mets out of Hickory High School in Chesapeake, Virginia. He also signed a national letter of intent to play in college for Georgia Tech, but signed with the Mets instead.
- He was a three-time all-state selection in Virginia.
- Drove in 93 runs for Capital City in Single-A in 2002, and was named a Florida State League all-star in 2003.
- Was named the Mets Minor League Player of the Year in 2004, when he hit .363 with 10 home runs at Double-A Binghampton and .298 with eight home runs in 31 games for Triple-A Norfolk before he was called up to the Mets on July 21.
