Before The Bigs:

  • Did not play baseball competitively until he walked on to the Norwalk Community College team in Connecticut. He was a late-bloomer, growing seven inches as a senior in high school, and he became a junior college All-American.
  • Drafted in the sixth round (187th overall) in the 1999 draft by the Baltimore Orioles.
  • Went 6-3 with a 1.97 ERA at Double-A Bowie in 2002, the year he made his big-league debut.
  • Had elbow ligament transplant surgery in September 2002, which cost him almost all of the 2003 season.
  • Career Highlights:

    • Made the big leagues for good in 2004, and went 6-10 as a rookie for Baltimore.
    • Improved to 6-8 in 2005 and 15-11 with a 3.76 ERA in 2006.
    • Struck out 15 batters in a win over the Rangers on July 7, 2007, matching an Orioles record.
    • Set the Orioles season strikeout record in 2007.
