History:

The franchise was founded in 1882 as the Pittsburgh Alleghenies, became the Innocents in 1890 and the Pirates in 1891. The team joined the National League in 1887.

Memorable Moments:
  • The Pirates were beaten by more than 10 runs in three of the games of the 1960 World Series, but prevailed on light-hitting second baseman Bill Mazeroski’s walk-off home run in Game 7, one of the most memorable endings in the game’s history.
  • Behind longtime slugger Willie Stargell, the “We Are Family” Pirates – named after a popular disco hit that year – won the 1979 World Series in seven games over the Baltimore Orioles.
