STEINBRENNER TIMELINE, 1992-2010

July 24, 1992: Steinbrenner applies for reinstatement, and Vincent allows Steinbrenner to retake control of the Yankees before the 1993 season. Steinbrenner takes a less visible role in the organization, letting GM Gene Michael and others run the team.

May 19, 1994: Steinbrenner's character on the hit show "Seinfeld" first appears, as character George Costanza gets a job as assistant to the traveling secretary with the Yankees. Steinbrenner's character, voiced by Larry David, appears in 13 episodes of the show.

Nov. 2, 1995: Steinbrenner hires Joe Torre as manager.

Oct. 26, 1996: Yankees win their first World Series in 18 years, beating the Atlanta Braves in six games. They win World Series championships again in 1998, 1999 and 2000, giving the Yankees four titles in five years.

Aug. 5, 2001: Winfield enters the Hall of Fame as a San Diego Padre.

March 19, 2002: The Yankees launch the cable television YES Network, a revenue source that helps make the Yankees the most valuable franchise in professional sports.

Dec. 27, 2003: Faints at memorial service for football star Otto Graham in Florida.

Aug. 16, 2006: Takes part in groundbreaking for new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Yankees win ninth consecutive AL East title.

Oct. 29, 2006: Faints while watching granddaughter in a play in North Carolina and his hospitalized.

Oct. 8, 2007: Cleveland Indians upset Yankees in first round of the playoffs, and Torre is not brought back as manager.

March 27, 2008: Yankees' spring training stadium in Tampa is renamed George M. Steinbrenner Field.

July 15, 2008: Delivers balls for ceremonial first pitches for All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium and is seen crying while riding in the golf cart.

September 2008: Yankees' run of 13 consecutive playoff appearances ends.

Nov. 20, 2008: Hands over controlling interest in the team to Hal Steinbrenner, his son.

April 16, 2009: Attends first game at new Yankee Stadium.

Nov. 4, 2009: Yankees win 27th World Series - seventh with Steinbrenner as owner - in six games over Philadelphia.

April 13, 2010: Attends his final Yankees game, the home opener, and receives a World Series ring in a luxury suite, presented by Derek Jeter and Joe Girardi.

July 13, 2010: Steinbrenner dies of a heart attack at age 80 in Tampa, Fla. Team is valued at more than $1 billion.
