The Associated Press compiled the payrolls for the Opening Day rosters of the 30 major league teams before the 2011 season. The totals include salaries and pro-rated shares of signing bonuses.

The average salary for the 844 players on opening-day rosters and disabled lists was about $3.3 million, up 0.2 percent from 2010, according to the AP analysis on March 31, 2011.

The New York Yankees had the top payroll for the 11th consecutive season, even though their total dropped 2.3 percent, to $201.7 million from $206.3 million.

The team that made the biggest cut was the Kansas City Royals, who chopped their payroll in half from $72.3 million to $36.1 million.

The team that made the biggest jump was the defending American League champion Texas Rangers, who raised their payroll from $55.2 million to $92.3 million, a 67.1 percent leap.
