When the ball hits the bat, the hitter shouldn't swing the bat forward or the hitter might hit it too hard. The momentum of the ball should be sufficient to put the ball in play far enough from the catcher to make it effective.

Bunters can angle the bat to aim the ball down a baseline for even more effectiveness. Keep in mind that if a bunter try to bunt with two strikes and the ball goes foul, he or she is out, the same as a strikeout.
