Career Highlights:
- Was considered one of the top umpires in the game in the post-war era, working American League games from 1954-78.
- Worked six All-Star games, three League Championship Series and five World Series.
- Earned Silver Star and Purple Hart in the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
- Was the umpire in Cleveland on the infamous "Beer Night" on June 14, 1974, declaring Texas the winner of the game in the ninth inning when drunk fans stormed the field.
