Career Highlights:
- Was the first president of the National League in 1876. He had formed the Hartford Dark Blues of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players in 1874.
After Baseball:
- He left baseball after 1876 and is one of the few Hall of Fame members who are better known for their life outside of baseball. He would later serve as mayor of Hartford, governor of Connecticut, and then as a United States Senator.
- Was president of Aetna for 43 years and had increased its assets from $25.7 million to $207 million.
