Career Highlights:
- Had the highest recorded batting average ever in 1894, when he won the Triple Crown. He hit .440 and led the NL in doubles (51), home runs (18) and RBI (145). His on-base percentage that season was .502. He reached base three times in one inning.
- Had a .326 lifetime batting average, with 2,293 hits in 17 seasons.
- Also was a great defensive outfielder, and stole 597 bases.
- His Boston Beaneaters teams (the team that later became the Braves) won four pennants in his nine seasons.
After Retirement:
- Served as a Red Sox coach, and one of his young students was Ted Williams.
