- Considered the best African American player of the 19th century, he starred in the International League for six seasons before blacks were banned from organized baseball in 1887.

- Played the final 16 years of his career in the early Negro Leagues, where stat-keeping was sketchy, but was considered the best player on the powerful Cuban Giants of the 1890s

- Buried in an unmarked grave in New York.
