- The Royals won the 1985 World Series over the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games. Down 1-0 and facing elimination in Game 6, the Royals cause was aided by a controversial call by first-base umpire Don Denkinger, who called Jorge Orta safe at first to lead off the bottom of ninth inning when replays clearly showed he was out. The Royals came back to win 2-1.
