Jawing around the big Wrigley series
I still think interleague baseball is little more than a waste of time, and unfair to boot, but there are times when this gimmick has its moments.
In the Second City this weekend, the two Chicago first-place teams will meet at Wrigley Field. It's the first time that both are in first place when they've met since, well, 1906, when they met in the World Series.
And the combatants have done their parts this week, with White Sox GM firing off this missive to the Chicago Sun-Times, about the differences between the Cubs and White Sox:
"It's so different. You might as well build a border, a Great Wall of China on Madison (Avenue) because we are so different. ... We might as well be in two different cities.
"The unfortunate thing for me is that it's a shame that a certain segment of Chicago refused to enjoy a baseball championship brought to their city. The only thing I can say is `Happy anniversary.' "
Williams, of course, is referring to the White Sox's 2005 championship and the Cubs' last championship 100 years ago, in 1908.
John Danks is starting the opener for the White Sox on Friday afternoon. ''We'll all be bringing our nose plugs, try not to smell all the urine over there,'' Danks told the Sun-Times. ''Nah, we're looking to have fun over there, but that place is a [bleep] hole.''
But it's certainly a place that many baseball fans will want to be this weekend.
