Using all-time lineups, who would win between Red Sox and Yankees?

By December 22, 2011

Follow me on:

We're starting a new series that will roll out for every team over the coming months: The All-Time Lineup.

It's not for career service, either, which makes it more interesting. It's taken from the best season any player had at that position in team history in order to create a starting lineup. To qualify, a player had to play a majority of their games at that position in a particular season.

For the first two teams profiled, we picked the biggest rivals. Who would win in a game between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, all-time, with these lineups?

Yankees:

  1. Derek Jeter SS
  2. Alex Rodriguez 3B
  3. Babe Ruth RF
  4. Lou Gehrig 1B
  5. Mickey Mantle CF
  6. Bill Dickey C
  7. Tony Lazzeri 2B
  8. Hideki Matsui DH
  9. Charlie Keller LF

Red Sox:

  1. Tris Speaker CF
  2. Wade Boggs 3B
  3. Ted Williams LF
  4. Jimmie Foxx 1B
  5. David Ortiz DH
  6. Nomar Garciaparra SS
  7. Carlton Fisk C
  8. Dwight Evans RF
  9. Bobby Doerr 2B

Starting pitchers are the Yankees' Ron Guidry (1978) and the Red Sox's Pedro Martinez (1999).

Some omissions? Check out the stats, arguments (and the bench players), for the all-time teams for the Yankees and Red Sox.

Why not Reggie Jackson or Roger Marris as DH for Yankees
and Yogi Beara for Catcher
what about rest of the team and pitchers?

Red Sox could have Ruth as Right Fielder, or Ruth and Yaz or Rice, or Dawson as DH too. Who would pitch for the Red Sox, Cy Young or Roger Clemens? Both teams could have Sparky Lyle in the bull pen right?

Strict rules for these, folks – follow the link to the all-time team for an explainer. It’s not a career record — it’s one season. Of course Berra had a better career than Dickey. But Dickey was better in one season. Of course the outfield would be Mantle-DiMaggio-Ruth, but none of them played left field.

(Ruth played right field in Boston, by the way, for one year. He got some consideration there but he was already in the rotation, and Dwight Evans had the better stats, slightly.)

Next week, it’s Mets vs. Phillies by the way.

Dickey is better then Berra. But no way Joe DiMaggio isn’t center fielder for ALL TIME CENTER FIELD. Mays included. Mickey Mantle in Left.
