A co-worker who doesn't have a dog in the playoff fight this year made a hilarious musical selection on his computer as Mark Loretta's pinch-hit, bloop single gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a 2-0 series lead over the St. Louis Cardinals.
On his computer on iTunes, he cued up a clip from Madonna's mid-1980s hit song, "Holiday." Would have been a great choice for the Dodgers' PA system, too - the Dodgers took a Matt Holliday mistake and took some time to celebrate an improbable 3-2 victory.
"He lost the ball in the 50,000 white towels shaking in front of his face," starting pitcher Adam Wainwright said to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "It doesn't seem really fair that an opposing team should be allowed to shake white towels when there's a white baseball flying through the air. Dodger blue towels -- how about that?"
Holliday still should have caught the ball, and Wainwright should have gotten the win after a great performance. It's the kind of play that goes down in history if the Cardinals don't win the next three games.
"Obviously, I couldn't see the ball. I lost it in the lights," Holliday said, according to the Post-Dispatch story. "You come in for the ball. You get a good read on it. The ball's in the lights. At that point you hope the ball hits your body or hits your glove.
"It was unfortunate timing. It really is. It wasn't for lack of effort. I couldn't see the ball."
The Rockies evened up the series against the Philies as Cole Hamels was ineffective. His wife (the former Heidi Strobel from "Survivor" and a Playboy shoot) was in labor, too - although a clubhouse manager didn't tell Hamels until after he was knocked out of the game. So Phillies fans, stop using that as an excuse. (Good story here on how it used to be for players whose wives went into labor during a game.)
And the Angels, thanks to a great outing from John Lackey, jumped out on the Red Sox with a 5-0 win, reversing the trend of the past few seasons. It's now up to Josh Beckett to keep the Red Sox from going down 2-0. And Sox fans wouldn't want anybody else to be on the mound tonight.
Updates: Playoff central.
