Field set for May and June Madness (so to speak)
They don't have "One Shining Moment," but they do have many of the same schools and fight songs and colors. The basketball champ (North Carolina) and both national title football teams (Oklahoma and Florida) are top-eight national seeds.
And they'll go from 64 to one in the next month or so. The top eight national seeds for the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, which begins this weekend at 16 campus sites:
- Texas: Very deep pitching staff, led by Chance Ruffin, the son of former big-league pitcher Bruce Ruffin (who led Texas to the title in 1983).
- Cal State Fullerton: In the tournament for the 18th consecutive year, they're playing for their fifth national championship.
- LSU: Won the SEC regular season and tournament and lived up to high ranking to start the season.
- North Carolina: First baseman/outfielder Dustin Ackley and pitcher Alex White are both likely first-round picks in the draft next month.
- Arizona State: Pac-10 champs are hosting for the 19th time and for the third consecutive year.
- Cal-Irvine: Hosting for the first time, but brutal regional draw with ACC tournament champ Virginia, future No. 1 overall pick Stephen Strasburg and San Diego State, and defending national champ Fresno State.
- Oklahoma: Sooners were knocked out of Big 12 tournament early, but are a national seed for the first time ever.
- Florida: Gators also bowed out of SEC early, and will host three in-state teams (Miami, Jacksonville, Bethune-Cookman) in regional.
The other eight schools chosen as host venues were Clemson, East Carolina, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Ole Miss, Rice and TCU. Click here for the full field. And get a refresher on the rules of the tournament, which is double-elimination in each of three rounds. So a team can technically lose up to five games and still win the championship.
Unlike basketball, those top seeds don't mean all that much. Usually a team from the pack rises up to win, as no top-eight national seed has won the College World Series since 2003.
