Sabathia will take the money
So much for that Dodgers prediction: CC Sabathia is about to be fitted for pinstripes. (A lot of pinstripes, as Sabathia, listed generously at 6-7 and 290 pounds, is probably the largest pitcher ever.)
He'll also get a very large contract from the New York Yankees: Seven years, $161 million, the largest contract ever given to a pitcher. I still believe Sabathia would have preferred a West Coast team in the National League, but no team was even going to be in the neighborhood of the Yankees financially.
Glancing at the comments on the story on the New York Post's Web site, most Yankee fans are happy, but not all that impressed yet. They now want A.J. Burnett and Mark Teixeira. Such is life in big-market New York.
They have competition for Teixeira all over the map. The Angels would like to keep him, the Red Sox want him (which would likely mean the end of Mike Lowell in Boston) and the darkhorse is the Washington Nationals, who want to make some kind of a splash. The Nats appear to be able to offer Teixeira the longest deal (eight years).
And for the lighter side of the meetings, it's always fun to read T.J. Simers' take. The LA Times columnist is wandering around Las Vegas this week.
