Rusty Tillman: Canseco's first big-league dealer?
The Florida Times-Union published an interesting story about former big-league outfielder Rusty Tillman, now homeless and living in the woods near Jacksonville, his hometown.
Tillman, now 48, was an outfielder in the New York Mets and Oakland A's organizations and played briefly in the majors for both. He descended into a life of drugs, and he reveals, steroids. He said he would drive to Mexico to smuggle steroids into the country when he was playing for the A's in 1986, which also happens to be the rookie season of future steroid user/whistle-blower Jose Canseco.
"I was his first in major leagues," Tillman says. "... I'm the one who started bringing it from Mexico."
The newpaper's web site also has a video report showing Tillman's life today.
