Olympics update: Finch throws gem

Tuesday August 12, 2008

The Olympic softball tournament is under way, and it started in familiar fashion for the American team.

Jennie Finch and Monica Abbott combined on a five-inning no-hitter in an 11-0 win over Venezuela. In their 15th consecutive Olympic win, Team USA set an Olympic record for runs scored in a game halted by the mercy rule. They also tied an Olympic record by hitting three home runs - Natasha Watley, Caitlin Lowe and Crystl Bustos each connected. It was the Americans' 20th shutout in 25 Olympic wins.

Finch is the team's biggest star, with the supermodel looks and the stats to back up her stardom. The Washington Post published an interesting profile of her home life back in the states with minor-league pitcher Casey Daigle and her 2-year-old son, who couldn't come to Beijing.

It will be a little tougher on Wednesday for the softball team, as 2004 silver medalist Australia is next for Team USA. Check out all you need to know about the softball team in Beijing with our expanded Olympic coverage.

And the U.S. baseball team begins play on Wednesday as well, taking on South Korea. Check out our baseball Olympic coverage here.
