Dunn deal great for Diamondbacks
When the Los Angeles Dodgers traded for Manny Ramirez - a deal that seems to be working out just fine - it put the Arizona Diamondbacks on the clock to add some pop of their own. And they came up with an interesting solution by landing Cincinnati Reds slugger Adam Dunn in a trade Monday.
Dunn isn't as good as Ramirez - Dunn has a career average of .247 and Manny has never hit worse than .296 since his rookie year - but Dunn could fill a void on a power-hungry team just as well. Dunn had 32 homers this season in Cincinnati this year and can become the eighth player in major league history to hit 40 or more in five consecutive years with eight more for Arizona.
"This is a huge, huge deal for me to play for a first-place team in August," Dunn said Monday, according to Yahoo Sports.
Dunn's power stats are better than most people think. He has 198 homers since 2004 (only Alex Rodriguez has more) and 515 walks since then, which is the most in the majors. He never was fully embraced by the Reds fans because the team never had success with Dunn, but he's fourth on Cincinnati's all-time home run list with 270. Only Johnny Bench, Frank Robinson and Tony Perez hit more.
Dunn does strike out a bunch, however (120 this season), and the Diamondbacks lineup is already free-swinging with Chris Young (122 strikeouts) and Mark Reynolds (147). Dunn is no gold-glover in the outfield, either.
Ramirez has four homers and is hitting .475 in his first 40 at-bats in Dodger blue. If the Diamondbacks get half of that from Dunn, they have enough to hold off Los Angeles down the stretch.
