Final Vote endorsements: Burrell and Longoria
There always are a few raised eyebrows at the All-Star selections, both from the fans' and players' perspectives. Sure, Cristian Guzman (Nationals) doesn't seem to be All-Star material, but the rules call for one per team.
The top three what-were-they-thinking moments from Sunday's selection show:
- Jason Varitek was picked as a backup catcher. Great guy, clutch performer, a winner. He's also hitting .218. (Varitek was picked on the players' ballot.)
- Pat Burrell wasn't chosen. The Phillies are in first place and the guy has 21 homers. You can blame the fans for this and the online vote from Japan, because Cubs rookie Kosuke Fukudome, who will start, isn't having close to the year that Burrell is having.
- Only two Rays. We get to see seven Red Sox and at least three Yankees, but we'll see Scott Kazmir for an inning and Dioner Navarro in catcher's gear for a couple of innings, representing the team that will likely have the best record in the majors at the All-Star break. That's why the fans should pick rookie Evan Longoria (.283, 16 home runs, 53 RBI) as the final player. No real blame here, because the fans and players didn't see the Rays coming on so strong.
No. 1 is over and done with, but fans can rectify No. 2 and No. 3 by voting Burrell and Longoria onto the team. Online voting continues until 5 p.m. Thursday.

And the Mets' David Wright will replace Alfonso Soriano.
