The best team so far? The DL
Wednesday June 18, 2008
We're almost three months into the season, and it seems there's a big name going on the disabled list daily. In fact, you could field an All-Star team just from the players who aren't on the field right now.
- Catcher: Victor Martinez, Indians (elbow surgery, out for two months)
- First base: Albert Pujols, Cardinals (strained calf, out for another week or so)
- Second base: Rickie Weeks, Brewers (strained knee, out for a week or two)
- Shortstop: Rafael Furcal, Dodgers (knee, out until after All-Star break)
- Third base: Ryan Zimmerman, Nationals (shoulder, out for 4-6 weeks)
- Outfielders: Alfonso Soriano, Cubs (broken hand, likely out until All-Star break); Garry Sheffield, Tigers (oblique strain, rehabbing now); Andruw Jones, Dodgers (knee, could return soon)
- Designated hitters: David Ortiz, Red Sox (wrist, out for a couple more weeks); and Travis Hafner, Indians (shoulder, out indefinitely)
- Pitchers: Chien-Ming Wang, Yankees (foot, out at least 2 months); Brad Penny, Dodgers (shoulder, out at least 2 weeks); Curt Schilling, Red Sox (shoulder, maybe out for year); Tom Glavine, Braves (elbow, out until All-Star break at least); Fausto Carmona, Indians (hip, out indefinitely); Daisuke Matsuzaka, Red Sox (shoulder, will return soon); Kelvim Escobar, Angels (torn labrum, could return in second half), Jeremy Bonderman, Tigers (thoratic outlet syndrome, probably out for season), John Smoltz, Braves (shoulder surgery, out for season)
The All-Star Game is certainly to have quite a few unfamiliar names on the roster this season.
