Free-agent pickings are slim

Wednesday January 2, 2008

The free agent shelves are picked over. Few Nintendo Wiis or IPods are out there - more like Playstation 1s and a Walkman or two that would have been great five years ago.

But that's not to say there aren't a few intriguing free agents still out there that could help the right team in 2008. A look at a few:

Barry Bonds: I know, I know... but he still hit 28 homers and had a .480 on-base percentage last season. Unless there's some kind of deal, there likely will be no sentence in his perjury case until after the season. Oakland would be a nice fit.

Livan Hernandez: The best of a very picked-over crop of starting pitchers. But he would look fine in the back end of a rotation. He was a big part of the Diamondbacks last year, but they've moved on with the acquisition of Dan Haren.

Kenny Lofton: Seemingly a perpetual free agent, the 40-year-old Lofton always finds himself on a contender. Who will it be this year? Milwaukee is reportedly interested in the outfielder.

Mike Cameron: Whoever gets him will have to wait after a 25-game suspension (banned stimulants), but he's still a slick fielder with some power. Might be a good fourth outfielder on a contender.

Pedro Feliz: He rolled the dice and didn't accept the Giants' offer of arbitration, and now he waits for a good offer. Feliz, a third baseman, doesn't hit for a high average and won't remind anybody of Brooks Robinson in the field, but he's hit 20 homers or more in each of the past four seasons and can also play first base and outfield.

Bartolo Colon: A lot of mileage on that right arm, but he's 34 and is only two years removed from a 21-win season. A short-term deal could be worthwhile, if he'll accept the challenge.

Jeremy Affeldt: No area is thinner on the free agent market than relief pitching, and decent journeymen such as Ron Mahay are cashing in ($4 million per year from Kansas City). The best remaining is probably Affeldt, who is just 28 and went 4-3 with a 3.51 ERA for the Rockies last season. A decent left-handed setup man.
