Yankees trump Boras
There are few people in sports more loathed than agent Scott Boras. He always seems to be out for the next record contract, making a name for himself more than his players.
And Alex Rodriguez must have seen the light in the past day or so, talking to the Yankees on his own.
And that's great news for Yankees fans who want to keep the best hitter of this generation in pinstripes.
"The past is the past. I don't know what brought about him approaching us,'' Yankees senior vice president Hank Steinbrenner said in a telephone interview Wednesday with the Associated Press. "I guess you could say things didn't go the way before that he intended on and weren't handled properly or whatever.
"But the bottom line, the only thing that really matters, is he wants to stay a Yankee. And it could be very well that he's always wanted to stay a Yankee and we just didn't know it.''
Rodriguez has been a Boras client since he signed with the Mariners out of high school. Just as interesting as it's been to see where A-Rod will end up, it now will be interesting to see the dynamic of the relationship between Boras and his client.
"It became clear to me that I needed to make an attempt to engage the Yankees regarding my future with the organization,'' Rodriguez said in a statement to the AP. "Prior to entering into serious negotiations with other clubs, I wanted the opportunity to share my thoughts directly with Yankees' ownership. We know there are other opportunities for us, but Cynthia and I have a foundation with the club that has brought us comfort, stability and happiness.''Photo: Cynthia and Alex Rodriguez are shown at a charity event on Sept. 5, 2007 in New York City.
