Game 2: Red Sox winning in all styles

Friday October 26, 2007

The Red Sox bashed away in an American League-style game in Game 1. They won in the NL way on Thursday in Game 2, 2-1.

The Red Sox scored their two runs on a sacrifice fly and a double by Mike Lowell. The Rockies scored one in the first on a groundout, then Curt Schilling, Hideki Okajima and Jonathan Papelbon held from there against the Rockies, who are down 2-0 heading to Game 3 in Denver on Saturday. Okajima was particularly impressive in middle relief.

But it was particularly gratifying for Schilling, who improved to 11-2 in the postseason in his career. His contract expires after the season, and while he's not the dominant pitcher he was five years ago, Red Sox fans want him back for another season.

The Rockies got a decent, but short, start from Ubaldo Jimenez. 102 pitches, 4 2/3 innings. He suffered the same fate that has affected all teams against the Red Sox this postseason. Patient, long at-bats, waiting for a mistake pitch or drawing a walk. No starter has lasted longer than 6 2/3 innings in 12 postseason games against Boston, and most haven't made it through five.

On the other side, Colorado's rugged offense is totally missing. Of the 54 outs against the Red Sox, 22 have been strikeouts. It's almost like the Rockies suddenly realized they were in the World Series and have become tense. And Boston's pitching has been outstanding.

Matt Holliday was a bright spot offensively with four of the Rockies' five hits. But he was picked off at first base in the eighth inning, an inexplicable brain freeze by one of baseball's best players. You'll rarely see a player get picked off that badly - it wasn't even close. Credit Boston's scouts for having an inkling that Holliday wanted to steal in that situation, and Holliday gambled that Papelbon wouldn't try a pickoff move.

The games in Colorado will be cold, with nighttime temperature in the 30s. It could be the coldest World Series games since 1997, when Game 4 between the Marlins and Indians was played in snow flurries at Jacobs Field.
